Had a great conversation at Tech Ed with Barry Briggs, the Director of IT at Microsoft, about a classic Microsoft topic—eating your own dogfood. Basically, Briggs’s internal IT group runs prerelease versions of Microsoft products and files bug reports and provides other feedback. Microsoft has a history of putting prerelease software into production use at the company to work through tough problems at the enterprise level. The latest hack out there is a new crack of the CAPTCHA technology. This little-known technology is the hard-to-read graphics that websites use to keep the spammer bots from signing up for their sites en-masse. 8/1/0/7 It’s raining here as the Annual Blackhat security conference starts here in Las Vegas. Its a rare event in the desert, keeping the skies overcast and cooler than the average 105 degrees F in July. An inauspicious beginning to a conference trying to refocus its mission while broadening its audience, a hard thing to do even when you aren’t under new ownership. The show was sold last year to CMP Media, not exactly your avant garde, counterculture company so its going to be hard put to keep its just this side of legitimate cred. Often when we have a complicated or unusual problem to solve, we turn to search engines. If we are lucky, our search results return a link to an authoritative source such as TechNet or Windows IT Pro. By authoritative I mean a source where the published articles have to go through some form of editorial or fact checking process before being posted to the site. The longer we are IT pros the more likely it is that we will encounter a problem that doesn’t have a neat solution that we can locate at an authoritative source. There are two basic ways of studying for certification. You do it all yourself or you go to a class. Before I go any further I’ll point out that I write Self Paced Training Kits for Microsoft, so there is a bit of an incentive for me to push one method over the other. On the other hand, I’ve also run instructor led courses. Anyway, now that that is out there, on with the post… Each type of study suits a particular person. If you simply can never find the time to study out of hours, or you need someone to give you a bit of a push when it comes to motivation, going to a class can be your best option.
